A SOMERSET CAROL
Come all you worthy people here
That may be standing by
Christ our blessed Saviour
Was born on Christmas Day
The blessed Virgin Mary
Unto the Lord did say
‘O we wish you the comfort
And tidings of joy
Now in the manger lay
He’s lying in the manger
While the oxen feed on hay
God bless his servants in this place
The lovingly do meet
And many happy Christmases
To strangers in the street
God bless our generation
Who live both far and near
And we wish them a happy
A happy New Year
The angel Gabriel from heaven came
His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;
‘All hail’, said he, ‘thou lowly maiden Mary
Most highly favour’d Lady,’ Gloria!
For known a blessed Mother thou shalt be
All generations laud and honour thee.
Thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold.
Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head,
‘To me be as it pleaseth God,’ she said.
‘My soul shall laud and magnify his Holy Name.’
Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born,
In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,
And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say:
REJOICE AND BE MERRY
Rejoice and be merry in songs and in mirthO praise our Redeemer all mortals on earthFor this is the birthday of Jesus our KingWho brought us salvation His praises we'll sing
A heavenly vision appeared in the skyVast numbers of angels the shepherds did spyProclaiming the birthday of Jesus our KingWho brought us salvation his praises we'll sing
Likewise a bright star in the sky did appearWhich led the wise men from the East to draw nearThey found the Messiah sweet Jesus our KingWho brought us salvation His praises we'll sing
And when they were come they their treasures unfoldAnd unto him offered Myrrh, incense and goldSo blessed for ever be Jesus our KingWho brought us salvation His praises we'll sing
FUM, FUM, FUM
Ancient prophets first foretold him
Fum, fum, fum
John the Baptist did extol him
Come join the marching throng of Christians
Come and away to fill the churches
With your voices praising Heaven
Hear the prophet tell his story
Christ is coming in his glory
Hear, you people round about me
Come and have your sins forgiven
Come join the marching Christians
Fum – fum!
IN A MANGER
In a manger far from danger,
Lies the child to whom we sing
Jesus new Lord, Christ out true Lord,
Are you born to us as King?
Shepherds come with praises bringing.
Joyfully their music ringing.
He is born to us as King.
Presents bringing, carols singing,
We come quickly on our way.
Gather round all, by the ox stall,
There the tiny baby lay.
He in such a humble place is born,
Crying, he appears to us forlorn,
Let us comfort him today.
Nearly two thousand years ago,
Under a starlit sky,
Many events were taking place
As the ancients had prophesied.
And a gift was given from heaven to earth,
The everlasting light.
So let us adore the Saviour born,
Immanuel, here tonight.
Heavenly hosts of angels,
Praising God on high,
Sang of the promised child to come,
The Saviour Jesus Christ.
Darkness was over Bethlehem,
Brightly the star did shine,
Showing the way to where He lay
In a manger for all to find.
Never before in history
Had there been such a sign,
For God was born in human form
For the sake of all mankind.
